Review of Bard show

http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID1368

"Then Costello joined the orchestra, stepping into the spotlight to sing Mingus' torch ballad "This Subdues My Passion" with lyrics by Costello. Never one of pop's most supple vocalists, Costello nevertheless sounded strong and made the song work, although both band and vocalist seemed tentative or under-rehearsed.

The evening began to loosen up and soar with the back-to-back brace of Mingus' "Jelly Roll" and Costello's own "Clubland." The best of the batch was "Invisible Lady," a clattering, complex amalgam of gear-shifting time signatures that showcased the best of the composer, the band and Costello as lyricist and singer.

All told, the 2-hour program featured six Mingus instrumentals, six Mingus/Costello compositions (highlighted by "Don't Be Afraid, the Clown's Afraid, Too," a bold blast of delightfully demented circus music), and five Costello tunes, as well as "Weird Nightmare" a Mingus tune with Mingus' own lyrics.
