...I've never seen anyone put so much into a show, especially one who's been on the scene for over two decades...Costello's voice was in rare form; thick and snarly at times, as full and bellowing as an opera singer at others. As he howled through songs like "High Fidelity" and "Clubland", he exhibited a range and clarity that most rockers his age (he's 47) could only dream of. He cleverly improvised melodies with a mix of comic and sardonic flair, putting every ounce of energy into the songs, which many in the audience knew by heart.... (From an Austin Newspaper - source unknown) "You would think that, with everyone from John Denver to the Germs having been feted with tribute records, Elvis Costello would've long ago been the subject of one. But Austin label Glurp says it's putting out the first album of Costello covers recorded especially for the project. (Rhino slapped together some previously released Elvis re-visions a few years back.) "Almost You: The Songs of Elvis Costello," expected to hit stores in August, features such local bands as Fastball ("Busy Body"), Okkervil River ("Riot Act") and Li'l Cap'n Travis ("Blue Chair") and wild cards like Vic Chesnutt and Jack Logan ("Alison"), Matt Pond P.A. ("Green Shirt") and Brenda Kahn ("Watch Your Step"). Executive producer Eric Zappa says the only song two acts wanted to do was "Sleep of the Just," but since Kevin Russell had also recorded "Indoor Fireworks," NYC's Mendoza Line got "Sleep." Russell's version will be a hidden track. . ." (order the record here) (submitted by Scott Gibbs)
