Everything But The Girl: Like The Deserts Miss the Rain / 07.11.2002 / By RUSSELL BAILLIE
It seems since lacklustre last studio album Temperamental EBTG's duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt have gone into semi-retirement. And while this compilation coming after the earlier Home Movies collection might have the whiff of superannuation about it, it's neatly complementary to the earlier collection.
While there are a few tracks from their taurocholic 80s, the emphasis is on the years since their 90s embrace of all things dance, Latin and drum'n'bass. So its 16 tracks include remixes (Todd Terry's Missing, Chicane's Before Today, Photek's Single, and Watt's own remix of Wrong as Tracey In My Room), intriguing covers (Captain Beefheart's My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains and Elvis Costello's Almost Blue, Antonio Carlos Jobim's Corcovado) as well as extramural collaborations (with Massive Attack on Protection, with Spring Heel Jack on Walking Wounded). That might sound like a B-sides grab-bag but it makes for a surprisingly cohesive collection of substantial toe-tap factor. Label: Virgin

"The American debut of the Anuna holiday show will take place Dec. 16 at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York. The troupe, which includes 16 singers and five dancers, is the original Riverdance Choir. Anuna was founded in 1987 by Dublin composer Michael McGlynn to explore and redefine the music of the ancient Celts. The group's name derives from the Irish concept of An Uaithne, which collectively describes the three ancient types of Celtic music: Suantraí (lullaby), Geantraí (happy song) and Goltraí (lament). Under the direction of McGlynn, the group has produced 10 studio albums and has performed with Elvis Costello, Sting, Michael Crawford, the Chieftains, Jeff Buckley, Sinéad O'Connor and Andrea Corr. The performance will feature music from the new album, "Winter Songs," scheduled for release Nov. 19."

EC along with The Clash, The Police, and others will be officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 18th induction ceremony March 10 in New York and televised later on VH1.
Read about it at USA TODAY, and at the RRHOF and Yahoo and CDNow and in HI, and in Australia, and in Australia again, and Canada, and the UK, and in NYC as well as cyberspace (with ec photo) and San Fransico and even CNN. And the New York Times weighs in.
Selected Quotes: ...Costello, a prolific genre-hopper with hits such as Alison, Pump it Up and Veronica, led the tight trio, the Attractions, for more than a decade. He still performs with two of its members, keyboardist Steve Nieve and drummer Pete Thomas.... .."These inductees represent many influential genres of rock, including 60s soul, heavy metal and 1970s English punk," executive director Suzan Evans said in a statement.... ...As is often the case with the rock hall, the ceremony has the potential for some tense reunions in tuxedos. Costello feuds with Attractions bassist Bruce Thomas...

Bruce Thomas gets a plug, though not a namecheck in the Guardian's Media supplement on Monday: Talking about what books he's been reading, Christian O'Connell, a Radio DJ, sez: "I recently read a brilliant biography of Bruce Lee, which was written by Elvis Costello's bass player" There's also a namecheck in a letter in today's edition which appears to be about folk singers.
