"Jerusalem" is a really great album. And Steve puts on a hell of a show live.

"The musical corner of my life changed the first time I heard an urgent, angst-infused voice on a rock song that goes something like this: "Don't start that talking..."

Elvis Costello was accused by some benighted souls of becoming a pretentious windbag through his late-90s collaborations with jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, saxophonist John Harle, songwriting legend Burt Bacharach and Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter.  His first name may be Elvis, and his latest album may contain the word ''Cruel,'' but chances are when Elvis Costello comes to Miami on Saturday he'll be sporting his signature horn-rimmed black glasses, not a white polyester jumpsuit. And we think the London-born Costello will keep the gyrating to the minimum, opting rather to do what he does best -- sing. Promoting his album When I Was Cruel -- his first new work in seven years -- Costello first emerged during Britain's punk scene in the late '70s (his American TV debut came in 1977 on Saturday Night Live, after the Sex Pistols pulled out at the last minute). Since then Costello has dabbled in pop, Tin Pan Alley and country, and has collaborated with everyone from Burt Bacharach to Paul McCartney, with whom he recorded the hit ''Veronica'' (you know, the song being played during the outtakes at the end of There's Something About Mary). Catch Costello and his band the Imposters 8 p.m. Saturday at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, 1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Tickets are $37.50-$52.50, available through Ticketmaster (305-358-3885). Or catch him Nov. 10 when he stars in an episode of The Simpsons. We think Marge'll mack him.
